How Do You Ask Customers for Google Reviews Without Breaking the Rules?
Ask every customer, the same way, after the work is done. Send a plain Google review link or QR code. Do not offer discounts or gifts, do not ask only happy customers, and do not request specific wording. Google prohibits incentives and selective solicitation of positive reviews.
What does Google allow?
Google says reviews must reflect a genuine experience. Merchants may ask for honest reviews without offering incentives or trying to influence the rating or content. Customers need a Google Account to post one.
How do you build a review request routine?
- Pick the moment. Ask after the job, visit, or delivery is complete. Google says not to pressure people to review while they are on your premises.
- Get your link or QR code from your Business Profile.
- Write one message and use it for everyone. Do not filter by who seemed satisfied.
- Keep the wording neutral. Do not ask for a certain rating, topic, or staff name.
- Skip staff quotas. Google says merchants should not require staff to collect a set number of reviews.
- Reply to reviews. Keep replies short and specific. Do not use them for promotions.
- Handle problems privately. Invite an unhappy customer to contact you by phone or email.
A sample message: "Thanks for choosing [Business]. If you would like to share your experience, here is our Google review link: [link]. Honest feedback of any kind is welcome."
What is allowed and what is not?
| Action | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ask all customers for an honest review | Yes | Google allows genuine, unincentivized requests |
| Offer a discount or free item | No | Google bans incentives for reviews |
| Ask only customers you think are happy | No | Google bans selectively soliciting positive reviews |
| Ask for a review that names a team member | No | Google bars requests for specific content |
| Pay someone to remove a bad review | No | Google bans incentives for removal |
| Flag a review that breaks Google's policy | Yes | Google provides a reporting tool |
What about family and employees?
The FTC says family members may write reviews if they clearly disclose the relationship. Google's Maps policy separately says content based on a conflict of interest is not allowed. For Google, skip it.
What this won't do
Reviews are one part of local prominence, along with the quality of your profile. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help. It does not promise a ranking. AI can help you draft replies you approve. It should never write reviews posing as customers.
