Do Brevard County Small Businesses Need AEO or GEO? What Google Says About AI Search
AEO means answer engine optimization. GEO means generative engine optimization. Both describe work to appear in AI answers. Google says that for its Search, this is still SEO: AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on its normal ranking systems, and no special files or markup are required. For other AI tools, public documentation is thinner.
What are AEO and GEO?
Google's guide defines AEO as "answer engine optimization" and GEO as "generative engine optimization," and says optimizing for generative AI search is, from Google Search's perspective, still SEO. It tells owners to review its guidance on evaluating third-party SEO advice before buying "AEO" or "GEO" services.
How does Google build AI answers?
Google says its AI features use retrieval-augmented generation, also called grounding, which relies on its core ranking systems to retrieve pages from its index. They also use query fan-out, a set of related queries the model generates to find more information. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google's "AI features" page says there are no additional technical requirements, but its newer optimization guide adds that the site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible.
What does Google say you can skip?
| Tactic | Google's position |
|---|---|
| llms.txt files | Google Search ignores them. They neither help nor harm there. |
| Chopping pages into "chunks" | Not required |
| Rewriting text just for AI | Not needed |
| Seeking inauthentic mentions | Not as helpful as it might seem |
| Special schema.org markup | None needed |
What should you do instead?
- Make helpful pages that answer real customer questions in plain language.
- Add what only you know: your process, your area, your prices if you can share them. Google's guide says unique, non-commodity content likely matters more than any other tip in it.
- Keep pages crawlable and indexed. Check robots.txt.
- Keep your Google Business Profile current.
- Make sure structured data matches visible text.
- Verify the site in Search Console and use its Generative AI performance report.
- Do not mass-produce pages for every possible phrasing. Google says doing so mainly to manipulate AI responses violates its scaled content abuse policy.
How do you check results?
Google says sites in AI features are counted in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, and its optimization guide points to a Generative AI performance report in Search Console that covers generative AI features on Search and Discover. For other tools such as ChatGPT or Perplexity, this post found no official report. You can ask a question yourself, note the date, and record whether your business appears. That tells you what you saw on one day.
What this won't do
No one can guarantee a place in an AI answer. Google says indexing and serving are not guaranteed, and it warns that no third-party tool has access to its internal ranking or AI systems. This post cannot say how ChatGPT, Perplexity, or other tools pick sources, because their public documentation does not explain that.
FAQ
Is AEO different from SEO?
For Google Search, Google says it is the same work. Other tools may behave differently, and their rules are less documented.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
Not for Google Search, which ignores it. Creating one will neither help nor harm there.
Does FAQ schema get me into AI answers?
Google says no special schema is needed. Use structured data only when it matches the visible text.
Should I hire an AEO agency?
Read Google's guidance on evaluating third-party SEO advice first. Ask any agency, including Fruxd, to explain exactly what it will do and what it cannot promise.
